For more than 50 years, Gastier has been putting its expertise, know-how, and commitment to excellence to work for the Quebec construction market.
With the highest standards of quality and safety, we provide multi-sectoral, multi-disciplinary, and integrated solutions in the fields of electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, insulation, plumbing, boilermaking, piping, and structural steel construction.
At the Heart of the Construction Industry
1971 – Founding of Gastier
Gastier was founded as a building electrical contractor by a trained electrician and one of his project managers. The industrial boom in Quebec at the time worked in Gastier’s favor, with the number of contracts growing rapidly.
The company was still small, and key clients such as Bombardier, Pratt & Whitney, and Johnson & Johnson provided financial support to help Gastier carry out its contracts.
1973 – Launch of 24-Hour Service with Its Own Trucks
1973 – Knowing How to Abandon Projects: A Strategy
Gastier did not participate in the major projects for the Montreal Olympic Games or the hydroelectric developments underway at the time. This strategic decision allowed the company to attract new clients who had been overlooked by competitors focused on those large-scale projects. During this period, Gastier also developed its 24-hour service with its first trucks.
1975 – Gastier Diversifies
Gastier's expertise expands into the industrial sector with the creation of Gastier Mécanique. The plumbing division was established in 1978, followed by the instrumentation and automation divisions.
1980 – A Flourishing Decade
Gastier reported sales of $54M and employed 1,200 people at peak times. The company maintained these figures throughout the decade, thanks to the boom and growing demand of the industrial sector in Quebec.
1989 – Creation of Montage d'Acier International
Montage d'Acier International (MDI) specializes in the manufacture of storage tanks. Over the years, this brand has become a benchmark in the industrial construction sector. It wasn't until 2013 that Gastier officially purchased the entity.
$54M in sales and up to 1,200 employees
1990 – Creation of Aciers Inoxydables
The Gastier Aciers Inoxydables division specializes in the custom manufacture of tanks, specialized equipment, stair platforms, and other structures for the food and pharmaceutical industries. By taking charge of manufacturing, Gastier ensures better control over final quality. This gives the company an edge over its competitors, thanks to highly rigorous manufacturing processes and a proprietary quality management system, revised and approved by the Régie du bâtiment du Québec.
$70M in Annual Sales Between 2000 and 2006
2000 – The Rise of the Commercial and Institutional Sectors
The industrial sector declined in favor of commercial and institutional projects. In the early 2000s, Gastier participated in this wave of change, working on major projects such as the Palais des Congrès de Montréal, the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and the Centre hospitalier de Lachenaie. The company recorded annual sales of $70 million between 2000 and 2006.
2004 – A Consolidated Service Offering
Gastier consolidates all its divisions (electrical and mechanical, automation and instrumentation, piping, plumbing and boilermaking, insulation and structural steel fabrication). However, the company continues to diversify with the creation of Fabripec, which specializes in structural steel fabrication, and Les Constructions Gastier, which operates in high-voltage electricity. Gastier is also looking to broaden its horizons with major projects for Hydro-Québec, first in the province and then in Alberta.
2006 – Excellence in Health and Safety Policies
The trade press highlights Gastier's continuous improvement efforts in terms of OHS standards and the implementation of health and safety plans tailored to the requirements of each client. The company is recognized as an industry leader, despite a staggering number of reported hours in 2005.
2008 – One of the Largest Contractors in Quebec
Gastier consolidates the expertise of its various divisions, employing more than 3,000 permanent and temporary employees. Between 2008 and 2015, Gastier positions itself as one of the largest contractors in Quebec, and continues to take a proactive approach to health and safety to meet the ever-increasing demands of its clients.
2013 – Gastier Acquires MDI
Gastier establishes itself in the Quebec construction sector by acquiring MDI, enabling it to ensure the quality of the products it develops for its customers, from design to maintenance and compliance with standards. MDI's reputation remains strong, particularly for the reliability and durability of its installations.
2015 – Bouygues Construction Acquires Gastier
The Energy and Services division of Bouygues Construction acquires Gastier through its subsidiary, Plan Group. This transaction opens the door to a nationwide presence in Canada, initiated a few years earlier. Together, Gastier and Plan Group cover the institutional, residential, industrial, service, and building sectors across Canada. Gastier's integration into the Bouygues Énergies & Services division allows it to leverage the group's international presence to adopt new practices and consolidate its existing multidisciplinary expertise.
